During its 2005 National Education Summit in October, theNational Education Summit Committee will bestow the inauguralInabeth Miller Learning and Technology Award to an individualwho has made major contributions in instructional orcommunications technology with a focus on K-16, museum, orother learning environments. The winner will be chosen fromonline nominations (visit www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=410501233667) by an eight-member committeecomprised of technology and education professionals. Theaward commemorates Miller who was a nationally recognizedtechnology innovator and, prior to her death in 2003, VP ofBusiness Development for CELT Corp.
Full-time science instructors in K-12 and higher educationwho demonstrate innovative uses of data-collection technologywith a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld device inthe classroom are encouraged to apply for the Vernier Software &Technology/National Science Teachers Association TechnologyAward. Each of the seven grant winners will receive a $1,000 cashaward, $1,000 in Vernier equipment, and $1,000 toward traveland expenses to attend NSTA’s National Convention in 2006.Apply online until Oct. 14 at www.vernier.com/grants.
After-School All-Stars (ASAS; www.afterschoolallstars.org),which provides comprehensive out-of-school programs to keepchildren safe and help them achieve in school and in life, celebratedthe launch of its national campaign and new onlinenewsletter by offering subscribers a chance to win a trip toHollywood to meet its national spokesperson, Dwayne “TheRock” Johnson. Technology provider Kintera (www.kintera.com)helped ASAS by providing the needed tools to update its Web siteand create the newsletter, which ASAS hopes will help spread theword about the organization; build its list of supporters; andprovide fun, informational content for parents and children.
