Report: Personalizing Assessments To Improve Instruction

Can technology improve the effectiveness of assessments? According to a new report issued Monday by the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), it can when it's used in a less formal setting and applied for the purpose of improving instruction and outcomes for students rather than merely taking a snapshot of students' knowledge at a given point in time.

Malware Disguised as Social Networking Tops Emerging Security Threats

What's the top threat to data security going to be in 2009? According to the GTISC Emerging Cyber Threats Report for 2009 out of Georgia Tech's Information Security Center, the answer is malware specifically disguised as "benign social networking links."

Science Activities: Students To Participate in Astronomical Observations

From Oct. 20 to Nov. 3, students and other volunteers around the world will be participating in the "Great Worldwide Star Count," an effort funded by the National Science Foundation to map global light pollution and educate participants about astronomy. Students conducting observations will share their results via the Internet, which will be used in the ongoing annual research project.

Independence Hall Association Launches Free, Online American History Textbook

The Independence Hall Association (IHA) in Philadelphia has released a free digital American history textbook for middle- and high-school students, which will evolve to include interactive displays, video streaming, simulations or dynamic versions of the text, and opportunities for collaboration by students and teachers.

Pearson To Manage ELL Teacher Certification in California

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing has awarded a two- year contract to Pearson to manage certification testing (CTEL) for ELL teachers. Pearson already manages three other certification tests that are part of teacher credentialing in California: the CBEST, CSET, and RICA.
