Carroll County Public Schools Adds Digital Math Texts

Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS) has decided to expand an existing relationship with a private partner to adopt a new digital math book for middle and high school students across the district.

The district has decided to adopt Discovery Education's Math Techbook, which includes model lessons, real-world problems, teacher notes, formative assessments and a teacher dashboard designed to aid in creating differentiated instruction.

"Developed by Discovery Education's team of expert math educators with the input of teachers and administrators from across the country, Math Techbook features dynamic, Common Core and state standards-aligned content, interactives, videos, digital tools and game-like activities that increase students' motivation to learn math," according to a news release. "Useful student tools including a graphing calculator, geometry tool, whiteboard tool and matrix solver are also embedded into each Techbook.  In addition, students interact with content in a manner familiar and exciting to them, and can monitor their own progress in real-time with the Student Dashboard."

The adoption builds on a relationship launched in 2013, when CCPS won a grant from the Maryland Digital Learning Innovation Program that went, in part toward purchasing the company's Science Techbook for students in grades 3-8. CCPS classrooms also access digital resources through Discovery Ed's Streaming Plus service.

"Carroll County Public Schools is pleased to expand its partnership with Discovery Education," said Margaret Pfaff, director of curriculum and instructional resources at CCPS, in a prepared statement. "Discovery Education's new Math Techbook empowers our teachers to deepen students' understanding of mathematics and helps support the district's mission to prepare each child for life-long learning and success."
