Google to Bring Free Coding Clubs to 26 New York Libraries

Aiming to increase access and exposure to computer science (CS) education, the Google CS First program announced that it will open free coding clubs at 26 public libraries in New York.

Google CS First, a program that provides coding clubs, is making its way to New York this summer. Google announced its partnership with the Children’s Discovery Center at Queens Library in New York this week. Queens Library is the first of 26 public libraries in New York that will be implementing the program.

Queens Library and Google have teamed up to teach about 300 kids how to code with the block-based programming language, Scratch, for two weeks. The library hopes to to increase kids’ confidence in using computer science and to demonstrate how computer science can impact their future careers, according to a news release.      

Google CS First is a free program that increases access to CS education through after-school, in-school and summer programs. More than 4,600 schools have used Google CS First clubs to teach CS skills to students. The program is open to students in grades 4 to 8. Topics covered include animation, art, fashion and design, friends, game design, music and storytelling.
