Guilford County Schools Adopts New Service Learning Management Tool

Guilford County Schools in North Carolina is implementing a new app for students to track their service learning hours.

Students in the school district volunteer in the school and the community with the goal of learning about themselves and their responsibilities as a citizen, making real-world connections to their education, and building skills for college and career, according to information from the district's site. Students track their service learning hours so they can provide a record of them when applying for a job or college.

The platform the students were using to record their service learning hours last year was rich in features, but ultimately proved too cumbersome for students to use easily, according to a report from Time Warner Cable News. After considering the option of developing a new platform in-house, the district instead decided to implement x2VOL from intelliVOL. "We chose x2VOL because it had the longstanding reputation for accurate management, and it creates a straightforward, user friendly — get in and get out — process for students, staff and community partners," said Charlos Banks, executive director of student services and character development, in a prepared statement.

x2VOL enables the district to manage, report on and verify thousands of service hours, "while also easing the approval process for students," according to a news release. The school district expects the new app to be available to students in October 2016. Students will be able to access it on a school computer, home computer or smartphone.
