Publisher Adds Augmented Reality to Children’s Books

Capstone, a publisher of children’s media, has launched a free mobile app that enhances its print books with augmented reality (AR).

Capstone 4D is a free companion app (available in the Apple Store and Google Play) that adds an AR component to print books. Capstone recently released its first series on the app called “Origami Crafting 4D,” which teaches students in grades 1 to 3 how to create origami greeting cards, ornaments, decorations and more. Students can use their smartphone or tablet to scan specific pages to watch videos for each project.

“Our Capstone 4D feature allows readers to extend their experience beyond the pages of a book with a richer media exploration that blends the best elements of print and digital technology,”  said Ashley Andersen Zantop, chief content officer at Capstone, in a news release. “4D is a great tool to create deeper connections between readers and content that matters to them.”

The company said in its news release it would integrate Capstone 4D into STEM-focused titles later this year.
