Common Sense Education Launches #DeviceFreeDinner Campaign

Common Sense Education, a project of the nonprofit organization Common Sense, is sponsoring a Device Free Dinner campaign, with the hashtag #DeviceFreeDinner. Common Sense Education is encouraging the distribution of an online toolkit for educators, which offers tips on achieving media balance at home.

The Device Free Dinner website provides resources for teachers, students and schools to host a device-free event through school. The resources include posters, student activities and tips on advertising the event. Possible dinner conversation topics are also included, as well as social media tags.

The website offers three suggested steps:

  • Organize a device-free event at your school;
  • Get your students involved; and
  • Share with parents and caregivers.

A video on the Device Free Dinner site says the average American spends nine hours per day on devices. Ditching electronic devices during meals leads to better conversation, laughter and healthier kids, the site says.
