Amplify Launches Custom AI-Powered Automatic Speech Recognition System

Curriculum and assessment company Amplify has introduced a custom Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system to support its instructional products. The system converts spoken language into written text, allowing students to interact with education software via voice command and receive detailed feedback on pronunciation, prosody, and more, the company explained in a news announcement.

Applications of the technology include reading assessment and practice, conversational tutoring, voice input for digital activities and assessments, and classroom monitoring, the company said. The ASR application can also compare student speech to target texts and evaluate reading fluency and comprehension, helping identify areas where teachers can provide additional support.

"Voice interaction is becoming increasingly important for young students using educational software, and we're seeing tremendous potential for growth in this area," said Amplify Chief Product Officer Alexandra Walsh, in a statement. "By developing our own ASR solution, we can test, refine, and deliver voice-enabled features that directly support student learning outcomes while meeting our high standards for safety, accountability, fairness, and efficacy."

Amplify is rolling out its ASR application starting with its mCLASS Literacy and Boost Reading programs (replacing the existing Soapbox ASR functionality), and plans to expand its use company-wide.
