Online School Consortium Moves to Desire2Learn

The Virtual High School Global Consortium is migrating its learning management system to the Desire2Learn Learning Environment, affecting about 600 member schools.

Virtual High School is a non-profit organization providing online supplemental education for K-12 students and training and certification services for teachers. It currently has more than 600 member schools from 32 states, with nearly 13,000 students enrolled in classes.

Liz Pape, president & CEO of VHS, said the organization decided to make the move to a new LMS in order to address growth and enable new ways to analyze and report on student progress.

"What we needed in the beginning from our eLearning software when we were a small organization is much different from what we need now," Pape said in a statement released Tuesday. "Features like automatic notifications when students are in jeopardy and reports that allow us to monitor teachers are a huge value to us at this stage in our development. Desire2Learn enables us to better deliver on future, anticipated growth and also to focus more on organizational quality."

Virtual High School said the migration to the Desire2Learn Learning Environment would be completed in time for the 2010-2011 school year. In the meantime, the oprganization is using an automatic migration tool in order to "simplify and shorten the migration process of the VHS course material from their former LMS to the Desire2Learn Learning Environment, enabling teachers to become familiar with the new platform over the spring and summer of 2010," according to Desire2Learn.
