Discovery Offers Free Professional Development Webinar
Discovery Educator Network (DEN), Discovery Education's online learning community, will be offering SCIcon 2011, a free virtual classroom to help educators integrate digital content and new technologies into science instruction. The event, being held Jan. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is interactive, allowing participants to learn the technologies in a hands-on manner, which in turn will enable them to implement their new tools and skills immediately in their own classrooms.
"Through this unique professional development event," said a spokesperson, "Discovery Education will demonstrate how teachers can create unique digital environments that put students at the center of science education."
Following a keynote by Reed Timmer, weather enthusiast from Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers, a group of digital education experts will lecture on several topics such as inquiry-based approaches and integrating digital content with hands-on learning. In addition, Cindy Moss of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina will discuss the lessons her district has learned from its implementation of Discovery Education Science.
"SCIcon 2011 offers ... a great opportunity to learn the latest strategies and tactics for using digital content and educational technologies to improve engagement in science lessons," said Bobbi Kocher, technology resource specialist for the School District of Osceola County in Kissimmee, FL.
Membership in DEN and advance registration for the event are required. For information on joining DEN, visit the overview page. For more information and to register for SCIcon 2011, visit the registration page.
