Google Revs Chromebook Pixel, 'Fastest Chromebook Yet'

Google Chromebook Pixel

Google has released a new version of its high-end Chromebook Pixel, two years after the introduction of the first Pixel.

The updated Chromebook Pixel is one of the first products on the market to feature the USB Type-C connector, a new standard developed by the USB Implementer's Forum that can transmit power, data and display over a single connector. The connector end is also symmetrical, so users don't have to check its orientation before plugging it in. The Chromebook Pixel features two USB Type-C connectors, one on each side, to make it easier for people to plug the device in to charge. Other upcoming devices from Google and other manufacturers will also feature USB Type-C, so users can potentially use the same cable to power their laptop, tablet, smartphone and other devices.

According to the company, the Pixel's battery lasted 12 hours under test conditions, and 15 minutes of charging provided a two-hour top-up. However, as with any device, actual battery life and charge time vary based on usage and other conditions.

Key features of the new Chromebook Pixel include:

  • Fifth-generation Intel Core i5 processor;
  • 8 GB of memory;
  • 32 GB solid-state disk;
  • Two USB Type-C ports;
  • High-resolution touchscreen;
  • Aluminum body;
  • 720p HD wide angle camera;
  • Wireless 802.11ac connectivity; and
  • Support for 4K video output over DisplayPort or HDMI using the optional Type-C video adapter cable.

A "Ludicrous Speed" or LS version of the Chromebook Pixel is also available.

In related Google news, the company has launched the Google Store, where people can purchase Google hardware such as Chromebooks, Nexus smartphones and tablets, Chromecast devices, Android Wear and other products.

The Chromebook Pixel is now available through the Google Store for $999 and $1299 for the LS version. Further information about the Pixel can be found on Google's site.
