NComputing has recently completed a large-scale computerization project for Andhra Pradesh Government Schools in India aimed at increasing overall access to technology while minimizing both infrastructure costs and energy consumption.

Working with technology partners--termed Education Service Providers (ESPs) under the contract--the company rolled out computer labs to 5,000 schools serving more than 1.8 million students in approximately four months. 8 ESPs were used to provide turnkey solutions for a range of services including system integration, site preparation, facilities creation, courseware support, and facilities management, among others.

"The government's goal is to accelerate computing access to the millions of students in its system, but to do it in an economical, eco-friendly way. NComputing plays an important role in achieving that goal," said Suresh Chanda, IT Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, in a prepared statement. "We are pleased that this first milestone has been met and that computing access has been created for 1.8 million students around the state--most of whom have never had the opportunity to even touch a computer."

According to the announcement, the new computer labs use desktop virtualization technology to help mitigate hardware and maintenance costs and have been equipped with the Microsoft Office Suite of products. The labs will be used to teach basic computer skills, office productivity, reading, and math, among other subjects.
