Early Warning System To Identify At-Risk Students for California District

The Santa Ana Unified School District in California will use eScholar's Complete Data Warehouse as the foundation for an early alert system, dubbed Project Arrow, in each of its nine high schools.

The new system, funded by an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Enhancing Education Through Technology competitive grant, will collect data from two student information systems currently being used by the district. The information will then be used to provide predictive reports through a dashboard interface, allowing district and school staff to monitor student progress and intervene or allocate necessary resources for student success.

The eScholar data model supports more than 2,500 data points in 38 categories including student and staff demographics, courses, grades, assessments, special education, career and technical education, enrollment, attendance, teacher certification, discipline and safe schools, surveys, and facilities.

"EScholar’s warehouse solution provides the necessary framework to integrate valuable information from our existing systems and provide a level of granularity that was not possible before," said Dawn Miller, assistant superintendent of secondary education at SAUSD. "Graduating students is our most important work and our culminating achievement. The recent ARRA/EETT grant, Project Arrow, and partnership with eScholar will provide an early alert system in support of our goal of student academic success."

The SAUSD serves approximately 58,000 students with 4,654 employees and an operating budget of $438.1 million.  It is the largest school district in Orange County and the sixth largest in California.
