Ed tech developer GradeCam has released a free formative assessment tool for educators. The announcement was made at the FETC 2012 National Conference, taking place this week in Orlando, FL.

GradeCam is a software suite that allows webcams and other types of cameras to be used to scan multiple choice tests and collect data to be used to aid instruction. The online tool is designed as a lower-cost alternative to test scanning machines and allows teachers to scan tests on the fly and discuss test results immediately as part of classroom instruction. Forms are printed from the software, and tests and quizzes can be taken either in pencil or in pen.

"Before I started using GradeCam I spent hours outside of the classroom grading papers," said Jake Anderson, a history teacher at Del Valle High School in Livermore, CA, in a prepared statement released by GradeCam. "But I still didn't feel like I was giving my students the feedback that they needed. GradeCam changed that by giving me a quick way to see what students are getting and where they need help."

According to information released by GradeCam, the new formative tool is designed to automate scoring of multiple choice tests to allow teachers to provide quicker feedback.

The new assessment tool is available now. Additional details about the new software can be found on GradeCam's site.
