HTML5 Moodle Mobile App Comes to Android, iOS

Moodle HQ has released an all-new HTML5-based mobile app for both Android and iOS.

Moodle Mobile, which was initially released in April as version 1.2 and updated just today as version 1.2.1, is a complete revamp of the previous Moodle app, My Moodle, which was only ever released on iOS. (Moodle announced it was switching from native app development to HTML5 development last year before the Android native app could make it to market.)

The new app is designed to work both online and offline and offers a subset of Moodle's features, including notifications, activities, access to courses and course materials, etc. It also let's users:

  • Record images and audio and upload those to a private file area;
  • Send private messages to other course participants; and
  • Create contacts and take notes about individual participants.

In addition, Moodle Mobile supports translation (synchronized with an institution's Moodle site) and UI customization through CSS.

The new mobile app is available now in the Google Play and Apple iTunes stores. It requires Moodle 2.4 with Mobile Web Services activated. (A test site can also be used. The address is http://school.demo.moodle.net. User name: student; password: moodle.) It requires iOS version 4.3 or newer or Android 2.1 or newer.

In other Moodle news, developers reported this week that Moodle 2.5 has reached a new milestone, passing all quality assurance tests for the new features being introduced in the next release. Moodle 2.5 is expected to be released this month, though no specific date has been set.
