Intel Adds Multi-touch and Active Pen Technology to Tablet

Intel has integrated N-trig's DuoSense controller chipset into its education tablet. The device comes with N-trig's active pen.

Multi-touch and active pen technology is designed to provide users with a natural pen-on-paper experience, a capability that is important in the classroom.

"Writing, sketching, annotating, illustrating, highlighting and showing process are essential parts of the teaching and learning process," said Robert J. Baker, director of technology, Cincinnati Country Day School, in a statement. "And when you want to take advantage of the power of a stylus, it is essential that you have an active digitizer solution like N-trig’s. Most people are not aware of the exponential difference in performance between active pens and a capacitive stylus, like you get with an iPad or other capacitive touch devices. Drawing or writing with what amounts to a finger on a stick is far too constraining to be useful."

Features of N-trig’s pen include:

  • Tracking pen and multi-touch input on a single digitizer;
  • Advanced palm rejection, to distinguish between intentional and unintended contact;
  • Support for mathematical characters, science figures and musical notation;
  • 256 levels of pressure sensitivity;
  • Projected capacitive touch technology; and,
  • Sharp input, with "an average pen accuracy of 0.25mm."

Additional information about the active pen and the education tablet are available online.
