Community College Pilot Studying Use of Lecture Capture Impact on Outcomes

An organization that works with community colleges and their students to help them succeed will be testing the use of lecture capture to improve outcomes. Achieving the Dream runs a network with 221 colleges around the country, helping them develop programs that will encourage students to stay in school. The new project, being tested at 10 of its institutions and in partnership with Echo360, will study the ties between various aspects of engagement, such as taking lecture and reading notes, participating in class and revisiting the lecture after school in recorded form.

The participating colleges will work with Echo360's Active Learning Platform, which records instructor presentations, allows teachers to add additional media alongside the recordings, maintains the recordings in a cloud-based library and adds analytics, dashboards and other reporting.

While using the platform, students will be able to ask questions during class anonymously and take notes that are aligned with the lectures. The instructors will receive input on where students are struggling as well as their engagement in and out of class.

"Echo360's Active Learning Platform enables community colleges to track and continuously improve student persistence and completion outcomes," explained Karen Stout, the non-profit's president and CEO, in a press release. "Our goal is to provide more actionable strategies that help community colleges ensure that more students are successfully meeting their educational goals."
