Raspberry Pi Sells 10 Million Micrcomputers, Debuts Starter Kit

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has sold more than 10 million affordable microcomputers. To celebrate, the foundation is debuting a new starter kit.

Since its launch in 2012, the foundation has sold more than 10 million of its $35 single board microcomputers to help students access computing and digital making skills. The “unashamedly premium” Raspberry Pi Starter Kit costs roughly $130, according to CEO Eben Upton.

The kit will contain the following:

  • A Raspberry Pi 3 Model B;
  • An 8GB NOOBS SD card;
  • A case;
  • A 2.5A multi-region power supply;
  • A 1m HDMI cable;
  • An optical mouse and a keyboard with high-quality scissor-switch action; and
  • A copy of Adventures in Raspberry Pi Foundation Edition

While other retailers have sold Raspberry Pi product bundles in the past, this will be the first kit from the foundation. Upton explains in a blog post why the foundation held off on selling its own kit. “Very early on, we decided that we would offer the bare-bones Raspberry Pi board without accessories: that way, cost-conscious consumers get the lowest possible price,” he wrote.

The kit is available for purchase in the United Kingdom – through element14 and RS Components – and it will become available to the rest of the world in the coming weeks. Further information is available on the Raspberry Pi blog.
