Turner Learning Takes CNN NEWSROOM On the Road

Turner Learning, the educational division of Turner Broadcasting System, took "CNN NEWSROOM & WorldView" on the road this fall, stopping in five cities to host live forums where students talked about issues affecting their lives. Among the special guests on the tour were Richard W. Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education; Mark Gearan, director of the Peace Corps; and Linda Roberts, director of the Office of Educational Technology.

The forums focused on "Teachers' Legacy and Literacy" (Washington, D.C.), "Community Service" (Miami), "Peer Pressure" (Atlanta), "The Challenges of Diversity" (Chicago) and "Learning with Technology" (Los Angeles). Following each forum, students continued their discussions in town hall meetings with community members and other guests.

"CNN NEWSROOM & WorldView" is a free, 30-minute segment of commercial-free news and feature programming tailored for schools. It airs on CNN every weekday from 4:30-5:00 a.m. EST. Enrolled educators can record and play back all or portions of a program at their convenience.

A daily classroom guide, posted online, provides a run-down of the stories, defines terms used in the news, and offers suggestions for class activities and homework. All broadcasts are closed-captioned for the hearing impaired. Turner Learning, Inc., Atlanta, GA, (800) 344-6219, www.learning.turner.com.
