'Cloud Projector' Integrates Thin Client for PC-Free Presentations

Mitsubishi is launching a new "cloud projector" with an integrated thin client function that eliminates the need for a separate PC. The device is debuting this week at the FETC 2013 conference taking place in Orlando, FL.

The Mitsubishi WD390U-EST is a DLP-based projector offering WXGA resolution (1,280 x 800), a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, and a brightness of 3,000 lumens. Its short-throw lens allows it to project a 70-inch (diagonal) image from a distance of about 23 inches.

The projector's built-in thin client, coupled with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, allows it to run presentations in place of a traditional computer, using content stored in the cloud or on local servers. It can also be paired with a tablet or other mobile device using WiFi-Doc or SidePad, both available on Android and iOS platforms.

As Mitsubishi described it: "Teachers and presenters can use a mobile device such as a tablet or a smart phone to access, mirror and control a computer that is connected to the projector and the same WiFi network, and present Powerpoint, Excel, Word, text, PPD and JPG files from their iOS or Android devices directly through the projector. For the first time, presenters are untethered from their computers and can control and present from any location within the classroom or meeting space. Both the SidePad and WiFi-Doc apps are free downloads via the Apple App store or Google Play."

"Teachers have a unique set of issues when they present in the classroom and shouldn't have to worry about technical problems when uploading their lessons or run late because of technical difficulties," said Wayne Kozuki, product manager, Mitsubishi Electric Visual Solutions America, in a prepared statement. "Our new WD390U-EST solves all those problems by making it really easy--teachers simply log on to the network, access their lessons and begin. This also is a great benefit for standardizing instructional technology and materials on a school-wide or district level. It's the logical next step in presentation technology."

Other features include:

  • Integrated remote login function for LAN display use;
  • Digital zoom;
  • Simultaneous message display;
  • LAN connectivity;
  • 6,000-hour lamp life in economy mode;
  • Built-in 10-watt speaker with variable output; and
  • Compatibility with third-party remote management systems, including Crestron and AMX.

AV inputs include HDMI, dual RGB (mini D-sub 15-pin), USB type B (for USB display), S-video, composite video, stereo RCA audio jacks, and dual stereo minijacks. Outputs include RGB and stereo minijack. Networking and control ports include LAN (RJ-45), USB type A (for flash media or other devices), and RS-232C.

The new model weighs in at 9 pounds and measures 12.8" (w) x 4.4" (h) x 10.2" (d).

The Mitsubishi WD390U-EST is expected to be available in March. Pricing has not been announced. The company reported that additional models would be announced in the coming year.
