FYI

The Internet has already surpassed television as the primary medium of choice among teens and young adults who now consider the Internet their media "hub," according to a recent study commissioned by Yahoo! Inc. and Carat North America. The study is based on a Harris Interactive poll of more than 2,500 teens and young adults aged 13 to 24 and focus group research by Teen Research Unlimited. The study revealed that, on average, teens and young adults spend more time online weekly (16.7 hours, not including e-mail) compared to watching TV (13.6 hours); listening to the radio (12 hours); talking on the phone (7.7 hours); or reading personal, not scholastic, books and magazines (6 hours).

This month marked the start of open registration for "kids.us" domain names, which designate a child-friendly Internet zone free of inappropriate content for children under 13. "The Dot Kids Implementation and Efficiency Act of 2002" enabled NeuStar Inc., which has a contract with the Commerce Department to administer top-level Internet domain names in the United States, to offer "kids.us" domains in a serious effort to protect children online.
