McFarland School District in Wisconsin has approved the launch of a new virtual charter academy, Wisconsin Virtual Academy. K12 will provide the curriculum for the school. According to information released by K12, Four Lakes Education will act as the governing board.

Wisconsin Virtual Academy is a statewide public K-12 virtual school providing tuition-free education. It's open to students throughout the state.

There are two distinct programs through the academy: a K-8 program and a high school program. Those enrolling in the K-8 program receive instructional materials, printer, a computer (on loan), and a stipend for Internet use.

High school participants receive the same base equipment and are also offered a variety of curriculum options, an individualized learning plan, and access to advisors, coordinators, and other support personnel. The high school program offers 90 individual courses and four levels of courses each in core subjects like English, mathematics, history, and science.

Enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year is open now through Feb. 20. Further information can be found here.
