AutoCAD 2011 for Mac OS X Arrives for Education

Autodesk has brought AutoCAD 2011 for Mac OS X to its Education Community, offering teachers and students about 90 percent off the full commercial version. The standard education edition of AutoCAD 2011 for Mac, which also began shipping this month, will continue to be free for education users.

AutoCAD is Autodesk's high-end professional 3D design and drafting tool. Unlike the free education edition of AutoCAD, the commercial version that's being offered under a special education license will not place a watermark on rendered images. It will also include a perpetual license, as opposed to the three-year license included with the free edition.

As we previously reported, AutoCAD 2011 for Mac offers most of the features available in the Windows edition, including support for full native DWG file support (and compatibility with files created in other editions of AutoCAD. It also includes some Mac-specific interface features, including multi-touch gestures and document previews using Cover Flow, and offers an API that allows users to generate custom applications, workflows, and interface configurations.

The education license for the commercial version runs $395. The Mac edition requires any of several recent 64-bit Intel-based Apple machines, including Mac Pro, iMac, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air systems. Further information about the free and reduced-price editions of AutoCAD for MAC OS X, including complete requirements, can be found here.
