Pearson Calls for Input in Next-Generation Assessments

Testing provider Pearson Pearson Assessment & Information is asking education stakeholders to help guide the development of online assessments. The company has launched a wiki, called "A Road Map to 2014: Considerations for Next Generation Assessments," where education professionals and members of education-focused organizations can contribute their ideas about how best to transition tests from paper to screen.

The site currently provides a detailed, five-step plan as a starting point:

  1. Conduct a needs analysis.
  2. Develop a realistic transition strategy and plan.
  3. Ensure interoperability.
  4. Communicate proactively.
  5. Anticipate ongoing change.

Registered users can edit and add to these steps. They can also contribute comments and participate in discussion boards.

Input collected from the wiki will, according to Pearson, be considered for inclusion in a policy report slated to be released in June.

"Our vision for this initiative--from the launch of the wiki to the first published version of the roadmap--is to help states navigate, and mitigate, the many interdependent issues and challenges they will face as they transition to online assessments," said Shilpi Niyogi, executive vice president, national services, Pearson Assessment & Information, in a prepared statement. "The growing emphasis on digital learning has opened the door to new potential in how assessments can enhance and personalize learning in this country. We are at a crucial crossroads right now and want to provide tools that can foster the smoothest path to success. This roadmap will help states determine if they are properly equipped and prepared to develop and implement their own transition plan."
