Acer Revs Chromebox Line, Adds 4K Support, Dual-Core i3 CPUs

Acer Chromebox CXI

Acer's new Intel Core i3-based Chromebox

Acer is expanding its line of its Chromebox devices, which, like Chromebooks, run on Google's Chrome OS. Unlike Chromebooks, they come in a desktop form factor (somewhat resembling an external hard drive enclosure).

Two new models in Acer's Chromebox CXI line offer fourth-gen Intel Core i3 4030U dual-core CPUs and either 4 GB (in the CXI-i34GKM model) or 8 GB (in the CXI-i38GKM model) of DDR3 SDRAM. The devices, which require an external display, support both 2K and 4 K resolutions (2,048 x 1,536 and 3,840 x 2,160, respectively).

Features common to both models include:

  • 1.9 GHz fourth-generation Intel Core i3-4030U processor;
  • 16 GB SSD;
  • Gigabit Ethernet;
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless networking;
  • One PCI Express slot;
  • HDMI output;
  • Four USB ports (all USB 3.0);
  • Audio line out.

Both models are available now. The CXI-i34GKM runs $349; the CXI-i38GKM goes for $399. Acer is continuing to offer its Intel Celeron 2957U-based units as well, which start at $179 (list). Additional details can be found on Acer's site.
