High School Sells Online Spanish Courses

A virtual high school in Georgia is now selling its online Spanish courses, which can be used to earn credit by high schoolers doing credit recovery or by others who want to learn a foreign language. James Madison High School is offering Spanish I, II, and III. Each course costs $275 and includes printed and digital textbooks, instructor support, tutoring, and access to an online student community.

The school uses the Sakai learning management system to provide access to class work, which in the case of the language classes also includes audio and video instruction.

"There are many advantages to taking online Spanish language high school courses," said Leslie Gargiulo, the high school's chief academic officer. "Students can make up required credits without attending summer school, enhance their education while managing family or work obligations, even take classes that might not be offered at their primary high school."

The high school offers diploma programs that are regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. It's affiliated with an online for-profit institution, Ashworth College, also in Georgia.
