5 Members Appointed to National Assessment Governing Board

Five members have been named to the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB), the organization that oversees and sets policies for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

NAEP is an ongoing program whose aim is to measure academic achievement trends across a wide variety of disciplines. NAGB's membership totals 26 individuals whose role is to oversee NAEP and determine "subjects and content to be tested", set "the achievement levels for reporting," and publicize the results.

Only one of the board members named last week is new to NAGB, while four are returning. The new member is Lucille E. Davy, an education consultant and former commissioner of education for New Jersey. Returning members include Doris Hicks, principal and CEO of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School for Science and Technology; Tonya Miles, chief departmental administrator for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission; W. James Popham, professor emeritus from the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles; and Leticia Van De Putte, a state senator from Texas.

"These experienced and dedicated individuals play an important role in the field of education and I am grateful for their service," said United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in a statement announcing the appointments. "Their commitment to excellence will help guide our effort to give every child a college and career-ready education. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead."

All will serve four-year terms on the board that will commence Oct. 1, 2013 and conclude Sept. 30, 2017.
