Wireless Generation Unveils Second Edition of mClass Reading 3D

Brooklyn, NY-based K-12 education technology and services provider Wireless Generation has released the second edition of its mClass Reading 3D K-3 assessment tool.

Using its mClass handheld to Web platform, the literacy assessment system lets teachers flexibly perform formative assessment to increase instruction at every stage of reading development. Teachers record student responses and reading behaviors on handheld devices, which automate timing and scoring, and deliver results and instructional recommendations immediately.

The handheld units are later synced to Internet-connected PCs to transferred data to a secure website that lets teachers and administrators access reports and analyze student, class, grade, school, and district performance.

The mClass Reading 3D system was actually developed in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS; Rockville, MD). Aiming to close the achievement gap and raise performance across its diverse student population, the district has enjoyed sizeable reading performance gains.

At the end of the 2005-2006 school year, 90 percent of white kindergarten students, 87 percent of African American kindergarten students, and 85 percent of Hispanic kindergarten students in the district were reading at or above grade level.

“Our teachers now have instant access to student data to help them target instruction in the classroom because of the tool we developed with Wireless Generation,” said Jody Leleck, MCPS's chief academic officer, in a prepared statement.

The system lets teachers administer DIBELS and Reading Records, which are two methods of observational assessment of reading development and learning needs.

DIBELS enables frequent student progress monitoring, and alerts teachers to at-risk students who might fail to reach key reading development milestones. Reading Records help teachers probe fluency, reading strategies and comprehension for 4,000 fiction and non-fiction texts. This helps establish a proficiency baseline for each child to track their growth.

The system integrates results from these two assessment components to create a multi-dimensional view of each child’s literacy development.
