Orange County (FL), Austin and San Diego SDs Adopt Canvas LMS

Three large American school districts have recently adopted Canvas by Instructure as their primary learning management system (LMS).

Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) in Florida, San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) in California and Austin Independent School District (AISD) in Texas have all chosen Canvas as their LMS, making Instructure one of the fastest growing LMS providers in K–12 in the United States, according to a company news release.

In Florida, Canvas is now providing OCPS’s 200,000 students and their parents mobile access to learning materials and grades for each subject and/or class. After witnessing dozens of other Florida institutions select Canvas, the school district chose the LMS to support their 1-to-1 initiatives, the release said.

In Southern California, Canvas now serves SDUSD’s 100,000 students and teachers. When vetting LMS platforms for selection, the district’s administrators were attracted to Canvas’ ease of use, ease of integration and expansive features and tools, Instructure said.

“Our previous system closed down and our number one priority was getting a new system implemented as soon as possible for the benefit of our faculty and students,” said Michelle Sullivan, ed tech resource teacher for SDUSD, in a statement. “Canvas immediately impressed us with its rapid implementation time, its ability to integrate with our other district platforms and the ease of access and usability for staff and students.” 

In Texas, Canvas is providing AISD’s 83,000 students with new learning tools they weren’t getting with their previous LMS program. Canvas is helping AISD streamline the delivery of digital curricula, Instructure said.

The recent K–12 growth comes amid new innovations for Canvas, including the Canvas Parent app, a mobile app for parents that offers an on-demand view of their children’s progress; and a mobile annotation capability for students.
