Google Names Science Fair Winners
When Google's Science Fair competition was announced last fall, the goal of the initiative was to encourage students to pursue their passions in the STEM field. On July 31, Google announced the five winners of the competition including the grand prize winner Fionn Ferreira from Ireland who received a $50,000 scholarship for his future studies.
Ferriera's project focused on how to extract microplastics from water. Through using a visible light spectrometer, Ferriera was able to study samples using the software Spectragryph and he also examined samples through a microscope and analyzed them in Adobe Photoshop.
The four other winners of the competition were sponsored by other companies:
- Virgin Galactic Pioneer Award: Celestine Wenardy (Indonesia) - "Affordable Noninvasive Continuous Blood Glucose Concentration Monitoring via Interferometry and Thermal Technology"
- Lego Builder Award: Daniel Kazanstev (Russia) - "How can we help people with impaired hearing to express their thoughts"
- Scientific American Innovator Award: Tuan Dolmen (Turkey) - "Digital Agriculture Module Design That Can Harvest Tree Vibrations"
- National Geographic Explorer Award: Aman KA and AU Nachiketh (India) - "Averrhoa Bilimbi - A Natural Coagulant For Rubber Latex"
