Galaxy Sells Elem. Learning Network

The Galaxy Institute for Education granted an exclusive license for its GALAXY Classroom operations to Simon & Schuster, which will operate the project through its Educational Management Group (EMG) in Scottsdale, Ariz. Created from a philanthropic commitment by Hughes Electronics, the GALAXY Classroom is an interactive elementary (K-6) learning network featuring science and language arts content. It combines child-centered curricula and quality materials with satellite, television, VCR and e-mail technologies. GALAXY Classroom currently offers three programs -- Fixer Uppers and S.N.O.O.P.E., science for first and fifth grades; and The House, language arts for fourth grade -- broadcast in English, Spanish and opened captions for the hearing impaired via DirecTV. GALAXY is part of the elementary curriculum in more than 650 schools in North America. EMG plans to expand the customized curricula for grades K-8, with the goal of serving 20,000 schools by the year 2000. Educational Management Group, Scottsdale, AZ, (602) 970-3250, www.emg.com.
