"Consumer" ADSL Modem Debuts

Among the first, FlexCap2 is a modem for the new Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology, which boasts speeds up to 50 times faster than 28.8 modems. (For more on ADSL, see December 1996ís ìWeb exclusiveî feature by Gary Donhardt on T.H.E. Online.)

The FlexCap2 Adaptive DSL System operates at 640kbps to 2.2Mbps downstream and 272kbps to 1.088Mbps upstream. Its adaptive feature allows the unit to adjust its speeds to adapt to line conditions and distance. FlexCap2 will automatically configure itself or can be pre-set.

This ADSL system provides an Ethernet 10BaseT interface, integrates bridging capability for high-speed remote LAN access, and has a standard SNMP interface so it can inter-operate with existing systems.

FlexCap2, using GlobeSpan CAP chipsets, lets schools surf the net or download large files without tying up phone lines because ADSL supports simultaneous voice and data on the same phone line.

One trial of ADSL now underway has installed FlexCap equipment in Holland-Patent Central Schools in New York. Westell, Aurora, IL, (813) 376-9666
