FirstClass Embraces the Internet

SoftArc, providers of the popular FirstClass LAN system, have released FirstClass Intranet Server (FCIS), a "workgroup communication environment" that closely integrates the Internet. FCIS supports Internet protocols such as POP3, HTTP/HTML, Finger, SMTP/NNTP and MIME.

A special education bundle includes a unique interface, as well as product manuals written specifically for the education environment. Sean Murphy, project director at Emory University, said that "secure Web log-in and POP3, SMTP and NNTP protocols allow the FirstClass Intranet Server to provide the same mail functions as UNIX in the education market, but at a fraction of the administrative and machine cost."

The FirstClass Intranet Server features advanced e-mail, replicable discussion databases, remote access, forms processing, enterprise database access and information publishing services. Organizations can even publish all of their FCIS on the Web; all services are available through standard browsers such as Navigator and Explorer.
