Brief: St. Lucie County School District Partners with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Florida's St. Lucie County School District and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt have agreed to a five-year partnership aimed at raising student achievement and providing community access to materials and software.

The partnership will provide teachers with professional development and training in the use and instruction of technology and digital materials. Other goals of the agreement include:

  • The creation of a St. Lucie County Parent Academy;
  • Enhanced early childhood education;
  • A comprehensive science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum; and
  • Expanded access to the Internet and information technology for students.

"This partnership is a breakthrough step, and cultural game-changer for the people and economy of St. Lucie County. Our students will be taught in ways that they have not experienced before," said St. Lucie County Schools Superintendent Michael Lannon. "They will be equipped to meet the needs of the Florida Research Coast, as well as those that are critical for future economic development. This is about raising the entire community."

St. Lucie County Public Schools and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt also partnered in 2009 for a five-year technology infusion into the school district.
