Knovation Adds Youngzine Media

Knovation will integrate stories and multimedia on current events from Youngzine into netTrekker Search and icurio.

Youngzine is an online news magazine that provides free, original educational media in the form of stories, images, and videos to supplement classroom lessons for late elementary through high school level students.

Features of Youngzine includes:

  • Media covering world news, science & tech, our Earth, society & arts, and more;
  • New material every two weeks; and
  • The U Write program, through which students can submit travelogues, book reviews, articles, and comment on published articles. All submissions will be reviewed by Youngzine staff, who will provide feedback to students.

In addition, highlighted articles will be displayed in the current events area of netTrekker Search and icurio.

netTrekker Search is a tool designed to allow students and educators to find Web-based educational media quickly. K-12 teachers can search for resources by language, multimedia type, format, subject, grade level, specific standards, and teacher or student recommendations. NetTrekker materials include more than 300,000 resources available in digital format, including lesson plans, learning games, video, audio, assessments, and interactive whiteboard materials. netTrekker Search also includes role-based access and personalized homepages for each student and teacher, which lets the user add or subtract widgets with drag-and-drop functionality.

icurio is an online resource aimed at providing educators with learning materials and tools to help differentiate instruction for students. Users can access more than 330,000 Common Core standards-aligned digital resources for K-12 curriculum areas from elementary to high school and filter materials by type, including video, images, games, lesson plans, and Web materials in subjects ranging from math and science to philosophy and the arts. Resources can be further personalized by language, reading level, and type of learning aid. Users can also sort through materials from providers like BrainPop and Promethean, or browse by timeline or famous individual.
"Youngzine's content goes beyond simply stating the news by relating the context behind real world events to concepts children learn in classrooms, thereby making learning relevant. For example, news about a recent earthquake is presented in context with the lessons that students are learning about Earth's tectonic plates," said Deepa Gopal, founder and editor of Youngzine.

Subscribers to netTrekker Search and icurio will automatically receive an update incorporating the Youngzine resources.

Youngzine is also accepting applications for its Young Editors summer program. For more information about the program, including how to apply, visit youngzine.com/blog/calling-young-editors.
