San Diego USD, Cox Business Partnership Connects 92 Additional Schools

San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) in California is providing fast and reliable Internet to an additional 92 schools.

The district partnered with Cox Business to roll out 54 miles of fiber to deliver a 175-Gb/s WAN (wide area network). The project, which typically takes two years to implement, was completed in just 11 months and plans to launch at the end of November, according to a report from a local news organization and other sources.

Following the launch, a total of 189 K–12 schools in SDUSD will be connected, serving approximately 130,000 students and teachers in California’s second largest school district. SDUSD recently launched a 1-to-1 Chromebook program and the new network infrastructure will enable digital learning.

“San Diego Unified students already have access to some of the best technology in education today, but as anyone who has ever left their cell phone service area knows, the best technology is only as good as the internet service that connects you to the world,” said Cindy Marten, superintendent of SDUSD, in a Patch report. “Thanks to this partnership with Cox Business, our students will have access to enterprise class WiFi service, allowing them to collaborate with their teachers and peers in amazing new ways.”
