StraightAce Self-Tutoring App Aims To Help Middle School Math Students
Benesse America has unveiled a self-tutoring mobile app that uses gamification to help struggling middle school students improve in math. StraightAce, which is available now, is compatible with iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
For each Common Core-aligned lesson, StraightAce, appropriate for students in grade 6-8, provides 10 questions, 10 optional hints, and explanations for each correct answer. The app provides students with gold stars when they choose right answers, which can be exchanged for in-game rewards such as coins and avatars.
Other features of Straight Ace include:
- One-hundred-and-fifty math topics for each grade level, which can be selected by students;
- Easy, medium, and difficult multiple choice problems;
- A flashcard tool, which lets students review material from the previous day;
- Questions with wrong answers are posed again one week later for reinforcement; and
- A digital notepad, where students can take down notes and make math calculations.
In addition, StraightAce Link provides parents with an online dashboard to track student progress and how many subjects have been finished. They can view a snapshot of progress or a more detailed view. StraightAce Link also gives access to completed questions, problem explanations, lessons, and an inbox for parents and students to communicate. Parents can also complement students' work through the platform.
