Curriculum Teaches Health and Fitness

After two years of testing in high schools, the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention at Stanford University School of Medicine has released LIVE! - A Curriculum for Healthy Lifestyles, which teaches about nutrition, exercise and smoking resistance. The program, designed for junior and senior high schools, comprises a CD-ROM with eight class hours of instruction; reproducible student handbook; teacher's guide with daily lesson plans, handouts and transparencies; and training video. LIVE! guides students to making intelligent, informed choices that will impact their present and future health. For example, the curriculum explains how to resist pressure from peers to smoke, develop and maintain a program of regular physical activity, and reduce the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol. A primary goal is to lower the risk of heart disease. Funding for this program and its evaluation was provided by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
