Why have a section on Palm and Handheld PCs? For many reasons, not the least of the fact that many institutions are starting to utilize wireless LANs. And what do wireless LANs have to do with Palm PCs, you wonder? Just ask 3Com, who recently teamed with Sybase to enable cost-effective, reliable
wireless enterprise solutions for the Palm Computing platform. You may also want to check with Symbol Technologies, who just introduced a family of rugged, pocket-sized computers with advanced wireless LAN communications.
This advance in wireless-enabled palm computing holds promise for educational institutions. Utilizing this technology, instructors will be able to access important records from anywhere (and we mean anywhere) on the campus, using their handheld PCs. And, they'll be able to take that information home to manipulate on their own computers. As you can imagine, there are many possible uses for this technology.
New this year is the HP Jornada line of handheld and palm-size Windows CE-based PCs. Packaged with each model are applications such as Outside In (to view e-mail attachments, even if they aren't loaded on your HP Jornada), Pocket Quicken (to manage your finances and synchronize them with your desktop PC), Sierra Imaging (to view and annotate digital images), LandWare, Inc. (to solve mathematical problems), bFind and bFAX (for contact information and faxing).
The HP Jornada 820 Handheld PC weighs just 2.5 lbs. and best fulfills the primary need of mobile typing. You can send and receive e-mail and faxes, or navigate in the World Wide
Web from the quiet touch-type keyboard and touch pad. It is packed with an assortment of software solutions and Microsoft's Professional Edition software, which offers many of Microsoft Office's applications in this mobile form.
Secondly, Hewlett Packard Company offers the HP Jornada 420 Palm-size PC. It runs Windows CE on its 256 color, 240 x 320 pixel screen that is protected by a flap cover. A desktop management interface (DMI) allows you to configure it especially for yourself. Applications that allow you to view e-mail, track business expenses with Quicken ExpensAble, manage your cellular phone, manage your files with ExExplorer and solve mathematical problems with the business calculator are included.
Finally, in this line-up of Windows CE color handheld products is the HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC. It runs Microsoft's Professional Edition software for Windows CE in a smaller case than the HP Jornada 820. The HP Jornada 680 weighs only 1.1 lbs. and is 7.4" x 3.7" x 1.3".
