Partnerships Take Wireless in New Directions

LearningStation.com (LSC) has announced an alliance with Proxim to provide Proxim’s RangeLAN2 wireless LAN technology to its growing subscriber base as part of its network integration services for educators. LSC, an application service provider (ASP), enables subscribing educators to rent a broad variety of today’s leading educational software through the Internet with any Web-enabled PC or thin-client device. With a RangeLAN2 Card, users of thin-client devices can have instant remote connectivity to LSC’s education software and to the Internet for faculty e-mail, as well as for information stored centrally on the server.

In another partnership, Proxim has agreed to outfit NTS Computer Systems’ Windows CE-based DreamWriter with RangeLAN2 wireless adapter cards. Acting as a wireless thin-client device, the inexpensive DreamWriters (priced from $175) make it possible to put computing in the hands of every student. The combined solution’s flexibility and portability allow students to send and receive e-mail and browse the Internet. It also lets them access the server to operate its applications from any point within a classroom without cables or wires. Proxim, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, (800) 229-1630, www.proxim.com.
