Bronx Zoo Adds Gorilla Videoconference

The Bronx Zoo, a division of the Wildlife Conservation Society, has expanded its Distance Learning Expeditions by adding a new program for grades 7-12 called “Gorillas, Gentle Giants in Crisis.” This new one-hour real-time videoconference features the western lowland gorillas that live at the zoo’s Congo Gorilla Forest exhibit. Students will be challenged as they observe gorilla behavior and discuss the fate of this critically threatened rain forest species.

Aligned to New York state and National Science Education Standards, the lesson addresses ways in which humans impact ecosystems, how the conservation process works, and how societal issues either foster or impede conservation efforts. The videoconference is also accompanied by a Teacher’s Guide that includes lesson plans, an online exhibit tour, a Web-quest activity and reproducible student materials.
