Carnegie Learning Offers Free Trial; Report Shows Cognitive Tutor Increases Miami-Dade’s FCAT Scores

Carnegie Learning, creators of fully integrated technology and text-based math curricula called the Cognitive Tutor, invites schools nationwide to take the Carnegie Challenge this fall. The Carnegie Challenge (online at www.carnegielearning.com/directlinks/fallchallenge04) allows school districts to implement any of the Cognitive Tutor math curricula into their classrooms for six weeks at no cost, for up to 30 students per school. The curricula blend technology and cognitive science to help teach math. The Cognitive Tutor uses real-world scenarios in the form of word problems coupled with “smart” tutor software, which tracks students’ skills and customizes learning.

In additional news, The Reliability Group, a Florida-based consulting organization, has released a report funded by Miami-Dade County Public Schools which demonstrates that Cognitive Tutor Algebra I students achieve higher FCAT scores than students in other algebra programs. The study shows statistically significant gains in scores for all Cognitive Tutor students. The report can be accessed online at http://relgroup.net/cognitive.html.
