Discovery Adds Planet Earth Series to Unitedstreaming Plus

At the 2007 NECC convention taking place this week in Atlanta, Discovery Education announced that it's adding content from the BBC/Discovery Channel series Planet Earth to its unitedstreaming Plus and Science Connection services. Educators will be able to access video from the series, as well as teaching additional resources.

In addition to video from the 11-part, high-definition Planet Earth series, Discovery is providing unitedstreaming Plus and Discovery Science Connection subscribers with teaching resources, including "teacher's guides, writing prompts, animal guides, and posters," according to the company.

Discovery's unitedstreaming Plus is an expanded version of unitedstreaming. It's designed to allow educators to access a wide range of digital education materials. The enhanced version offers about 3,000 more full-length video titles than the standard version; access to audio files, including audio books, spoken word poetry, speeches, classical music recordings, etc.; about 20,000 photographic images; and more than 27,000 reference articles. It also offers classroom access to PBS programming.

Discovery Education Science Connection is a service that provides state-aligned, supplemental science education tools for education, including interactive content, multimedia content, virtual labs, and formative assessment.

In other Discovery Education news, the company announced that the School District of Clay County in Florida has signed up with unitedstreaming Plus, Science Connection, Health Connection, and ThinkLink Assessment services for all 38 of its K-12 schools, which serve some 36,000 students.

"Instruction for this generation of learners has to meet their unique needs. Teachers can now design 21st century lessons that integrate video clips and other content such as Planet Earth to really engage their students and immerse them in learning about our natural world," said Sharon Chapman, assistant superintendent for instruction of the School District of Clay County. "While past generations were subjected to watching full length films and videos, unitedstreaming Plus and Discovery Education Science Connection provide content clips that are relevant at the point of learning and bring the world's most fascinating creatures and habitats to our classrooms."
