It's one thing--a difficult thing, at that--to teach a class of high school students one particular subject. But what about teaching a class of special education students a variety of subjects at a variety of teaching levels? That was the responsibility of June Weston, and she accomplished it with good software and exceptional pedagogy.

D2L Launches Mobile Learning Environment

Desire2Learn this week announced a new mobile application of its Desire2Learn Learning Environment. Called Desire2Learn 2GO, the application ties in with Learning Environment 8.3 to provide access via Blackberry. The company also announced that it's streamlining integration Respondus 3.5, a quiz- and test-building application.

NASA Kicks Off K-12 Competitive Grants

NASA has launched a new grant program targeted specifically toward K-12. Called the K-12 Competitive Grants Opportunity, the program is aimed at methods of improving teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at the middle school and high school levels.

Technology in Motion' Program Opens Up to Middle Schoolers

Sony Creative Software, developer of the Vegas video production suite, has opened registration for its Technology in Motion 2 video contest for students. The competition, the second one this year, has expanded eligibility to include both high school and middle school students and increased total prizes to more than $400,000.

Utah Adopts DigitalSAMS for Statewide Student Data System

Utah will be rolling out a new student data management and achievement system statewide--the first such statewide deployment of its kind. The Utah State Office of Education has signed on with DigitalBridge for a system called DigitalSAMS, which will be made available to some 40 Utah school districts and 96 charter schools, as well as the Office of Education itself.

44 Middle Schoolers Named Semifinalists in Young Scientist Challenge

Forty-four middle school students have been named semifinalists in the 2008 Young Scientist Challenge, sponsored by Discovery Education and 3M, bringing them a step closer to the $50,000 grand prize, as well as other cash and special prizes.
