Florida Teachers Granted $47,000 for Classroom Energy Education

A group of 43 teachers from across Florida have been granted a total of $47,000 in funds for classroom energy education projects.

The grants, ranging from $500 to $2,500 each, are part of Florida Power and Light Company's (FPL) 2013 Teacher Grant program to fund classroom projects including wind turbine generators, solar car and golf cart races, and cooking with the power of the sun.

Grants are provided courtesy of the NextEra Energy Foundation, which is funded by shareholders of FPL's parent company, NextEra Energy, a producer of wind- and solar-generated energy.

The 43 grant award winning schools and teachers are:

Project proposals submitted to FPL were judged on content, creativity, stated goals, and budget and evaluation plans. Recipients were selected by the National Education Energy Development project (NEED), a nonprofit organization working with energy companies and agencies to advance energy curriculum in American classrooms. All selected projects adhere to the Florida State Board of Education's Sunshine State Standards.
