Absolute Software Intros Automatic Freeze for Offline Devices

Absolute Software has introduced the Device Freeze Offline Policy, a new security feature for its Absolute Computrace tracking product for computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

The feature allows IT to set an automated freeze command for any device that remains offline for a specific period of time. When a device disconnects from the network, a timer is activated in the device with a duration assigned by IT. If the timer elapses before the device makes contact with the Absolute Monitoring Center, the device is automatically frozen and IT is alerted. A summary reporting function provides details on endpoints that have been frozen, allowing IT administrators to investigate each device, validate status and unlock those devices that are not at risk.

The policy helps secure devices that may be unassigned or misplaced, the company pointed out in a press release. "For example, organizations with large endpoint inventories can ensure that forgotten devices are secured even if they remain in a dormant state — allowing them to satisfy corporate and regulatory concerns relative to data security and device usage."
