California's Largest STEM Symposium Starts Sunday in Anaheim
California’s largest STEM symposium starts Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center. About 3,000 educators and advocates of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are expected during the fourth annual California STEM Symposium, which runs Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 11.
This year’s theme is “Designing Our Future,” and the conference will highlight leaders in classroom innovation from across the state, as well as student teams showcasing critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork. Dozens of STEM-related workshops, panels and presentations are planned.
Tom Torlakson, the state’s superintendent of public instruction, will kick things off Monday. Symposium speakers will include Sir Ken Robinson, a TED Talks authority on creativity and innovation in education and business and author of “The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything”; Reshma Saujani, founder and CEO of Girls Who Code; Edith Widder, a biologist and deep-sea explorer and co-founder of the Ocean Research & Conservation Association; and Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer and director of the Fels Planetarium at The Franklin Institute.
