Sustainability Challenge to Award $35,000 in Prizes for Student Innovations

Discovery Education and CITGO Petroleum Corporation are teaming up to encourage students to become more engaged in their local communities. The CITGO Fueling Education Student Challenge asks students to develop an idea or prototype that aligns with one of four topics under the United Nation's Sustainability Development Goals.

The selected topics are safety and well-being, quality education, sustainable cities and communities, and life on land. The challenge is open to students in grades five to eight and students can participate individually or in teams with two to four individuals.

Each solution must follow the 4Cs framework and involve critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity. Students need to submit a one to two minute video that explains their problem, topic area and solution.

A panel of judges from Discovery and CITGO will select the top three entries.  The grand prize winner will receive $20,000, second prize $10,000 and third place $5,000. Schools with five or more entries will be put into a random drawing and get the opportunity to win a $2,000 scholarship.

Students can now enter the CITGO Fueling Education Student Challenge on Fueling Education's website.  Entries will be accepted through Feb. 13, 2020.
