Student Publishing Platform BoomWriter Merges with Curriculum-As-A-Service Provider Walch Education

Massachusetts-based student publishing platform BoomWriter Media has merged with curriculum-as-a-service provider Walch Education, based in Maine, the companies announced in a news release.

The new parent company, dubbed BW Walch, will offer “complete solutions for schools and teachers to create engaging in-class experiences and to provide better learning outcomes for students across all age groups,” according to the announcement.

BoomWriter has been used in more than 70,000 U.S. K–12 classrooms since its founding in 2012; the platform aims to give students in grades 2–8 an audience and a purpose for their writing, in the form of standalone writing challenges or as part of classroom assignments or writing curriculum. The company also serves thousands of schools in 100 other countries including the United Kingdom.

Combined, BW Walch has over 1 million student users of its technology solutions, according to the companies. In March 2022 alone, students using BW Walch solutions logged over 6 million reading sessions and wrote more than 72,000 books, using the BoomWriter collaborative writing tools. Two of BW Walch’s newer products, GoRead and the Curriculum Engine, earned industry awards since their launch during the 2020-21 school year, the company said.

Curriculum Engine allows state or local education agencies to customize their own curriculum on the BW Walch platform and is used in this manner by Florida for math courses ranging from basic math to Algebra 2, by North Carolina for five levels of math courses, among others; it also offers Common Core-based math courses and the Power Basics series in math, reading, science, writing, and more.

The merger follows recent BoomWriter acquisitions of UK-based ed tech providers Squirrel Learning and Axe Edge, the company said.
