High School Students Shadow Healthcare Workers in STEM Program

Students at one Washington high school were recently exposed to hands-on career experience in various healthcare fields through a partnership with a local hospital.

The program was part of Lake Washington School District’s Signature Programs, an initiative that focuses on problem-based learning and college and career readiness. Throughout the year-long partnership with EvergreenHealth, students at Juanita High School took courses in anatomy and physiology and biotechnology, and then shadowed healthcare workers, specifically providers, in their daily routines during a three-period block. Students also received professional advice into how to tailor their education to continue these careers.

"Juanita High School's partnership with EvergreenHealth has opened a world of new experiences and opportunities for our students," said Principal Gary Moed in a statement. "The walls of our classrooms have been expanded to experience science, research, and service to others."

The program will continue in the 2014-2015 school year and was funded through a local grant and the hospital’s levy funds.
